VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to log into the vCenter UI you receive the error: Invalid credentials

  • You've attempted to log in more than three times and you receive the same error and not the error that your account is locked out: User account is locked. Please contact your administrator.

Environment

vCenter Server 8

Resolution

The vCenter that you're trying to log into doesn't have the SSO domain that you're trying to login with, and the account isn't being locked out because it doesn't exist.

1. Determine the correct SSO domain by performing either of the following:

  1. Log into vCenter using another account and go to either:
    1. vSphere Client Menu > Administration > Roles. The SSO domain will be listed to next to Roles provider.
    2. vSphere Client Menu > Administration > Single Sign On > Configuration > Identify Provider tab > Identity Sources. Look for the row with a type of System Domain. This row's Domain will be the SSO domain.
  2. SSH to the vCenter server and run the command /usr/lib/vmware-vmafd/bin/vmafd-cli get-domain-name --server-name localhost
    vsphere.local

2. Attempt to log in with the correct SSO domain. If this still fails, you can reset the password by referencing vCenter SSO password login fails with error "User account is locked. Please contact your administrator"

3. After you've successfully logged into the vCenter UI, if you'd like to change the auto-generated password from step 1, reference Change Your vCenter Single Sign-On Password
