Issue/Introduction

  • VMs are connected to a vSphere Standard Switch
  • When editing a VM NIC or adding a new NIC, the desired portgroup isn't available in the drop-down list
  • The following error message is also seen when attempting to edit the VM's network settings in the ESXi host client:
    "The portgroup for Network adapter 1, network, could not be found. It has been assigned to network2."
  • ESXi vmk adapters are attached to the desired portgroup

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

vSphere Standard Switch portgroups either support VM connections or vmk connections.

Resolution

Create a new portgroup for VM connectivity.
