Issue/Introduction

In vSphere environments running ESXi 8.0 Update 3, administrators may observe the following:

  • The VMware Tools status for all Virtual Machines on specific hosts displays as "Unknown" in the vCenter UI.
  • Attempts to upgrade VMware Tools or VM Hardware Compatibility using "Upgrade to Match Host" fail.
  • Error Message: The operation is not supported on the object.
  • Manual remediation attempts to reach a specific version consistently fail.

Cause

The issue is caused by a missing tools-light VIB (vSphere Installation Bundle) on the ESXi host.

The tools-light package is the specific component that provides vCenter with the metadata required to validate and report on the status of VMware Tools for resident VMs. If this VIB is absent from the host's image profile, vCenter cannot determine the current Tools state, leading to the "Unknown" status and blocking lifecycle operations.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform a manual installation of the missing tools-light VIB using vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM).

1. Prepare the VIB

  • Download the appropriate VMware Tools VIB from the Broadcom Customer Portal.
  • Log in to vCenter and navigate to Lifecycle Manager > Imported ISOs/Updates.
  • Import the downloaded .zip or .vib file into the local patch repository.

2. Create and Attach Baseline

  • Create a new Host Baseline of the "Patch" or "Extension" type.
  • Add the imported VMware Tools VIB to this baseline.
  • Navigate to the affected Cluster or Host > Updates tab and Attach the new baseline.

3. Remediate the Host

  • Place the target ESXi host into Maintenance Mode.
  • Run a Pre-Check Remediation to ensure there are no VIB conflicts.
  • Click Remediate to install the VIB.
  • Once the task completes, Exit Maintenance Mode.

4. Verification

  • Check the Summary tab of VMs on the remediated host; the VMware Tools status should now report correctly "Guest stands by" or "Out of date".
  • Verify that the "Upgrade to Match Host" operation now functions without the "not supported" error.
