Issue/Introduction

This article explains about the preferred Disk Sharing Mode for Active-Active Oracle RAC Clustered VMs using physical RDM.

Environment

VMware vSphere 7.x

VMware vSphere 8.x

Resolution

Disk "Sharing" Mode:

  • The Disk "Sharing" option is meant for VMDKs or virtual RDMs (vRDM) only.
  • It is not for use with physical RDMs (pRDM) as they are not "VMFS backed".
  • So if your environment is utilizing physical RDMs (pRDM) then Disk "Sharing" setting can be remain to default "No sharing" value.

Shared physical RDM(s) for Oracle RAC VMs require:

  • SCSI bus sharing is set to Physical
  • Disk Compatibility mode for the shared RDM is set to physical for Physical compatibility mode

Example: For the Active-Active Oracle RAC VMs using physical RDMs (pRDM), the recommended VM settings will be like:

SCSI Adapter setting:

Change Type: Paravirtual
SCSI bus sharing: Physical

Disk setting:

Sharing: No-Sharing
Disk Mode:  Physical capability mode
