Issue/Introduction

  • vCenter Server detected "failed to create state.tgz"
  • The event occurs every hour on specific ESXi host
  • ESXi boot device is USB flash drive or SD card

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0

Cause

/sbin/auto-backup.sh fails to create ESXi configuration backup to /bootbank directory. /sbin/auto-backup.sh runs every hour.
This could be occurred due to boot device failure.

Resolution

Contact hardware vendor and consider replacing the boot device.
