Network administrators require a reliable method to monitor the uptime and availability of VMware NSX Manager and NSX Edge devices within their existing Network Monitoring System (NMS).
VMware NSX Manager and Edge appliances are currently integrated into the Network Monitoring System (NMS) using SNMP, but this method provides incorrect uptime or fails to retrieve it accurately. This is because the devices lack suitable SNMP OIDs to reliably track the uptime, necessitating a shift to an alternative monitoring protocol. The goal is to integrate these devices using SSH to correctly fetch the uptime and availability metrics.
VMware NSX
The primary cause for not using the standard SNMP protocol is the absence of suitable SNMP OIDs on the NSX platform that can reliably provide the uptime information for the Manager and Edge components. This necessitates an alternative monitoring approach.
Try to integrate the NSX Manager and Edge devices into the NMS using the SSH protocol (TCP/22) to execute the specific CLI command get uptime. The NMS must be configured to use SSH, authenticate with the necessary credentials, execute the command, and subsequently parse the text output to extract the numeric uptime value.
Sample Output:
* NSX Manager Command & Output:
nsx-mngr-01> get uptime
Tue Nov 11 2025 UTC 04:21:14.991
04:21:14 up 6 days, 23:03, 1 user, load average: 1.52, 1.46, 1.63
* NSX Edge Appliance Command & Output:
edge01> get uptime
Tue Nov 11 2025 UTC 04:21:35.063
04:21:35 up 6 days, 23:04, 1 user, load average: 0.30, 0.37, 0.44
Note: The NMS must be configured to parse the uptime value (e.g., "6 days, 23:03") from these text strings.
