VMware NSX

Issue/Introduction

  • Can we connect two different versions of NSX to the same vCenter using multi-NSX?
  • Will the second NSX instance be like a brand new deployment of NSX?

Environment

VMware NSX

Resolution

Different versions of NSX can be connected to the same vCenter using the multi-NSX feature.
All NSX versions must be 3.2.2 or higher.
Note: The 3.x release is now End of Service.

The NSX instances operate completely independently.
Each NSX instance has its own Managers and Edges.
If one NSX instance prepares a cluster for NSX, it owns the cluster.
Another NSX instance will see that cluster but it cannot prepare or edit it, it will be in read-only mode.

Please be aware that the "multi-nsx" feature has been deprecated as of VCF 9.0, see Deployment, Convergence, and Upgrade.
Starting with VCF 9.0, the multi-NSX feature is not supported. Ensure that before upgrading to version 9.0 or later, you have switched off the multi-NSX feature for compute managers added to your NSX Manager, else the NSX Manager pre-check step returns an error.
