Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to upgrade an NSX environment from 3.2.0 to 4.2.2.1, the upgrade fails and produces an error message similar to the one below:

Unexpected upgrade error while upgrading upgrade unit: [MMP] Node upgrade failed: MP upgrade failed at shutdown_manager step

  • There may also be error messages on the other NSX Manager Nodes in the environment showing a similar error to the one below:

Unexpected error while upgrading upgrade unit: [MMP] Upgrade stopped on this node as upgrade on other node ######## has failed.

Environment

VMware NSX 3.2.0

Cause

  • A service that needs to be stopped and then restarted on the NSX Manager does not successfully stop or start back up
  • There is a memory issue on the NSX Manager which is preventing the services from successfully starting back up

Resolution

Please note that it is not recommended to perform a reboot of any of the NSX Managers, Edges, or Hosts during an upgrade as this can cause further issues to the environment.

To resolve this issue, please open a support case with VMware by Broadcom and include the following data points:

  • All NSX Manager logs
  • Screenshots of the error messages seen in the failed state
  • Details of any troubleshooting processes that may have taken place.
