VMware vSphere ESXi

Issue/Introduction

  • Unplugging and reconnecting the network adapter on the ESXi host, the NICs came back up. However, when attempting to create a new port group on the vDS, the following error occurred:

Error:
"Operation failed! A general system error occurred: vDS host error: see faultCause Cannot create DVPort <portID> of VDS <VDS-Name> on the host <HostName>."

  • When viewing a list of hosts attached to the distributed switch, or from the manage hosts wizard under the vDS Status column, a yellow warning icon and the message below are seen:
    "Out of sync"

Environment

  • VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

  • This error  appears when the vDS configuration on the host is out of sync (or partially corrupted) after a networking disruption. If network connectivity is interrupted between the vCenter Server and one or more hosts, a synchronization interval may be missed resulting in this alert being displayed.
  • If the synchronization is lost between ESXi hosts and vCenter then there's the possibility of mismatched information between the list of ports on vCenter and the list on the hosts leading to out of sync condition for some of those ports.

Resolution

Follow the procedure below:

  1.  Place host in maintenance mode to evacuate VMs.
  2.  Remove Host from DVS (Verify that the vDS has no active attachments, as it will not allow removal if any components are still connected. Once confirmed, remove the host from the vDS )
  3.  Right-click DVS > Manage Host Networking > Remove the host
  4.  Add host back to DVS. Right-click DVS > Add Manage hosts > Add host -> Add uplinks in the same order they were removed.
  5.  Take host out of maintenance mode.
