VMware NSX

Issue/Introduction

  • BGP in NSX environment is established over Virtual Tunnel Interface, for example VPN tunnel.
  • VPN tunnel is down.
  • Following VPN state, BGP also goes down.
  • NSX will only raise the alarm for the VPN tunnel.
  • Alarm for BGP state is not raised by NSX Manager.
  • In this situation, SNMP trap for BGP state also won't trigger.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • NSX Manager's Routing Control Plane (RCPM) is designed to avoid raising any unnecessary alarms when VTI is down on any standby nodes.
  • The alarms are suppressed on the active node, hence BGP alarms will be suppressed internally when VPN (which BGP is established over) goes down.

Resolution

This is a known issue impacting VMware NSX.
