Issue/Introduction

During an HCX Bulk Migration, virtual machines remain in the “Initial Sync 0%” state and do not progress beyond.

The following events may be observed:

  • Replication group creation and configuration push steps are successfully completed on both source and destination HCX Interconnect (IX) appliances.
  • Migration progress stalls at the step “Enabling replication on source VM” for very long time.
  • Affected VM have physical Raw Device Mapping (RDM) disks attached.

Environment

HCX 4.11

Cause

This behavior occurs because HCX Bulk Migration has restrictions when handling virtual machines configured with RDMs.

  • Physical Compatibility Mode (pRDM): Not supported for migration.
  • Virtual Compatibility Mode (vRDM): Supported; however, these disks are converted to VMDKs at the destination during migration.

When VMs contain unsupported physical RDMs, HCX replication cannot initialize, resulting in the “Initial Sync 0%” stall.

Resolution

To migrate these VMs, consider one of the following options:

  • Convert the RDMs to VMDKs using storage vMotion or vmkfstools.

Refer to the KB article to know more about converting RDMs to VMDKs Converting a Raw Device Mapping (RDM) into virtual disk (VMDK)

To know more about vmkfstools command to convert RDM to VMDK, refer to the KB How to migrate a RDM backed disk to a new storage array

  • Remove the RDMs before migration and reattach them manually post-migration.

Refer to the KB article to know more about removing/re-attaching the RDM disks Migrating virtual machines with Raw Device Mappings (RDMs)
