Moving the configuration from an old Distributed Virtual switch to a new Distributed Virtual switch

Issue/Introduction

After creating a new distributed switch, we can move the network/configuration from an old Distributed Virtual Switch  to the new Distributed Virtual Switch

Environment

VMware VCenter 

Resolution

Steps 1:

• Add the VDS to the host
  • Right-click the VDS and select menu Add and Manage Hosts.
    
    
    • 
  • Add hosts to the DVS. Click the green Add icon (+), and add all hosts from the cluster. 
    • 
  • Skip Manage physical adapter and click next 
  • Skip interface Manage vmkernel adapter 
  • Click Next on the next interface 
  • and click finish 

Step 2:

• Moving the network/configuration from the old DVS to a new DVS
  • Go to  host and cluster
  • Select the host in question 
  • Click configure/ networking/ Virtual switches
    •  
  • Expand both switches 

Note: Make sure that we have 2 Virtual nics on the virtual switch in question as we will be moving from one DVS to the other Distributed Virtual switch.

• • Click Manage physical adapters  
    • 
  • Click on the Vmnic that is going to be moved under assign uplink and change it to none (this will detach the vmnic from this switch) and click ok 
    • 
  • Click on the newly created Distributed Virtual Switch and click on manage physical adapter 
    •  
  • add the vmnic to the new switch 
    • 
  • Once added, click the 3 dots and migrate networking 
    • 
  • Select the vmnic that we just added, click next 
    • 
    • After that select what VMK you want to migrate (make sure that you click assign port group and select )

Note: Do one at time to make sure you select the right ones 

• Once it's done, make sure that we still have connectivity. If connectivity is present, then procced with the next adapter 
• Manage physical adapters 
• and move the last vmnic to the new DVS

Migrating from Standard to Distributed vSwitch
