Unable to Install VMware vCenter Standalone Converter Due to Ongoing Installation Conflict

Issue/Introduction

While attempting to install VMware vCenter Standalone Converter on a Windows Server 2019 system, the setup fails with the following error message:

“Setup cannot continue. Another installation is in progress.”

Environment

Windows Server 2019

Cause

This error occurs when the Windows Installer service (msiexec.exe) is already engaged with another installation or update process. Windows does not allow multiple installations to run simultaneously, and any pending or stuck process can block new setups.

Resolution

• Reset the Windows Installer Service Open Command Prompt with Administrator privileges, then execute the following commands:

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

• Or open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). End any active msiexec.exe processes.
• A simple reboot often clears any lingering installation processes if the issue doesn't resolve then engage OS Vendor for further troubleshooting.
