Issue/Introduction

Symptoms

  •  After removing non-compliant VIB's and upgrading the host, vSAN host may fail to communicate with other nodes on vSAN cluster.
  • The issue is seen when the network cards disappear after removing the required VIBs as part of ESXi upgrade.
  • This may show warning on vSAN skyline health for network and data health
  •  [root@:~] esxcli vsan health cluster list
    Health Test Name                                    Status
    --------------------------------------------------  ------
Overall health findings                          red (Network misconfiguration)
    Network                                          red
    Hosts with connectivity issues                   red
    vSAN cluster partition                           red

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

  • The network interface cards may not be detected on host due to a missing network driver .
  • Network  driver vib may not appear for the physical network adapter.

Resolution

The IntelĀ® Ethernet 10G 2P X520 network adapter is not listed as a supported device for VMware ESXi 8.0 Update 3 in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide.

To resolve the VIB compatibility issue and enable installation of the required driver for the X520 adapter, perform a rollback to a supported ESXi version . This is the only viable option to restore proper functionality for the network adapter.
