Issue/Introduction

  • Moving the Content Library OVF Templates from one vCenter Server to another is required when the source vCenter Server is being decommissioned.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Resolution

Follow the steps below to migrate the OVF templates of a Content Library from one vCenter Server to another:

  • On the source vCenter Server:

  • On the destination vCenter Server:

    • Create a subscribed Content Library that subscribes to the publisher content library on the source vCenter Server. Refer to: Create and Edit a Content Library
    • On the New subscribed content library, select Actions -> Synchronize. This will synchronize all the library items from publisher to subscriber content library.
Note: To sync VM Templates (VMTX), vCenter Servers must participate in Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM). Refer to: VM Templates not syncing in Subscribed Library
    • Create a local content library on the destination vCenter.
    • From the subscribed Content library, select all templates -> Right click -> clone item.

  • All the OVF templates will now be available on the local Content Library on the destination vCenter Server.
  • Delete the subscribed Content Library.
