Issue/Introduction

VM templates need to be migrated from the existing vCenter to the new vCenter using HCX. When attempting to migrate VM templates directly through HCX, the migration process does not support templates in their current format.

Environment

  • VMware HCX
  • VMware vCenter

Cause

HCX does not support direct migration of VM templates. Templates must be in a powered-on or powered-off VM state to be compatible with HCX migration operations.

Resolution

To migrate VM templates to the new vCenter, follow these steps:

  1. Convert the template to a VM in the source vCenter:
    • Right-click the template in the vCenter inventory
    • Select "Convert to Virtual Machine"
    • Complete the conversion wizard
  2. Migrate the VM using HCX to the destination vCenter:
    • Use the HCX migration workflow to move the converted VM
    • Select the appropriate migration profile and network mappings
    • Monitor the migration progress through the HCX interface
  3. Convert the VM back to a template at the destination:
    • After successful migration, locate the VM in the destination vCenter
    • Right-click the VM and select "Convert to Template"
    • Verify the template appears correctly in the destination inventory

This workflow ensures templates are successfully transferred while maintaining their configurations.

When opening a support request with Broadcom for this issue, provide the following information:

  • VM template names requiring migration
  • Source and destination vCenter details (versions and build numbers)
  • HCX version in use
  • Source and target HCX log bundles with HCX database dump - see Gather Technical Support Logs
