Issue/Introduction

  • Once vCenter is upgraded to 8.0 U3 we see only 2 vCLS virtual machines being deployed per cluster.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.0x

Resolution

Starting with vSphere 8.0 Update 3, VMware has introduced Embedded vSphere Cluster Services (Embedded vCLS).This enhancement is based on vSphere Pod technology and is managed at the system level, aiming to minimize operational impact while maintaining full compatibility with existing environments.

One of the key changes is the reduction in the number of vCLS VMs per cluster:

  • Single-host clusters will now deploy one Embedded vCLS VM.

  • Clusters with two or more hosts will deploy two Embedded vCLS VMs, instead of the previous maximum of three.

This optimization helps reduce resource usage while preserving the core functionality of vCLS.
