Issue/Introduction

  • Upgraded to VC 8.0 U3e and ESXi 8.0 U3e, however, vSAN on-disk format and vSAN File Service are still 7.0 U3 versions.
  • Can not enable for vSAN File Service with error,
    "General vSAN Error. Cannot Enable vSAN File Service Because Compatible 7.0.3 OVF is Not Found"

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x
VMware vSAN 8.x
VMware vSAN File Service

Cause

vSAN File Service enablement workflow checks the vSAN on-disk format version to determine the compatible file service version for the cluster.
If the vSAN on-disk format version requested file service version is also not compatible, the workflow fails.

Resolution

  • When maintaining the old vSAN on-disk format version for 7.0 U3, use the OVF image of vSAN File Service 7.0 U3.
    Note, The required vSAN File Service OVF version varies depending on the vSAN On-disk format version.

  • Or upgrade the vSAN on-disk format to a version compatible with the OVF file you are attempting to use. See, Upgrading vSAN Disk Format Using vSphere Client
    ===
    Upgrade the vSAN on-disk format to version 20.0. If upgrading from on-disk format version 3.0 or later, no data evacuation is required (metadata update only).
    Upgrade FSVM to enable new File Service features and get all the latest updates.
