Issue/Introduction

This article addresses the 'Error in configuring VLAN backed transport node collections' failure occurring during inventory synchronization in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.x. This typically occurs when the synchronization task incorrectly initiates NSX transport node preparation on VLAN-backed clusters.

Environment

• VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x

Cause

Inventory synchronization logic in VCF 9.x performs strict infrastructure validation and may inadvertently auto-align NSX state for detected clusters. This leads to the unintended application of NSX network filters and host configurations on non-NSX clusters

Resolution

Before applying below steps, verify that all vSAN hosts have been decommissioned correctly. Residual metadata from unremoved disk groups or stale unicast agent entries often mimics this sync failure. Refer to KB Permanently Decommissioning a node from a vSAN Cluster for proper decommissioning procedures

1. Manually remove the host from the vCenter inventory
2. Run the inventory sync task from the VCF Operations manager.
3. Manually add the host back to vCenter, configure the VDS, and maintain the host in Maintenance Mode until the NSX host preparation is applied.
4. Monitor the NSX UI and wait until the status is 'Green' (NSX solution successfully applied).
5. Run the inventory sync from the VCF manager once more to finalize state alignment.
