Issue/Introduction

When attempting to use the console connection of a Linux based VM using the ESXi web GUI, vCenter GUI or VMRC application, only a limited amount of characters (typically 3-4) are typed into the console and then console stops accepting additional text input.

  • Text input to the console using the Windows onscreen keyboard on the PC / Workstation experience the issue.
  • Text input to the console using another VM such as a jump box also experience the issue.
  • Text input to the console of Windows VMs works as expected.
  • VMware Tools or OpenTools is installed and working as according to the ESXi/vCenter GUI.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vSphere vCenter 8.x
VMware Remote Console 12.x

Cause

Third party issue with physical hardware / operating system on the PC / Workstation where the physical keyboard is plugged in.

Resolution

  • Reboot the physical PC / Workstation being used for the console connections and attempt text input again.
  • Use a different physical PC / Workstation and attempt text input again.
