Issue/Introduction

After migrating a VM to another host, VM lost its network connectivity until it get moved back to the original host

Environment

VMware ESXI host

Cause

Misconfiguration on the VMKernel adapter prevent connectivity of the virtual machines to the internet after being migrated to a different host

Resolution

Troubleshooting steps

  • Click on add networking on the switch on question

NOTE :  By us creating a different Vm network with the same setting as the original, it can simulated the original network that is being impacted without impacting the production

  • Confirm if we are using VLAN Id tagging ( this will be something that the customer has to reach out to their network team and confirm)
  • After confirming if  this is trunk or not change the VLAN Id to none 0 and see if we are able to see any traffic
    • You can check connectivity with the following  command:  vmkping -I vmk0 (gateway ip)
      • If we still don't have connectivity go to Teaming and Failover, click override and switch one Nic to active and the other to unused adapter

  • Save and preform a VMKping again to see if we have any connectivity
    • If we don't see any connectivity perform the same task on the other adapter and see if we have connectivity one NIC and not on the other
  • Once confirmed delete the test VMKernel adapter and edit the production one with the same settings
  •  After editing the vmk adaptor, perform the VMKping command towards the gateway and if this work then migrate the VM and we should be able to see the VM has network connectivity
