Issue/Introduction

When upgrading Kubernetes clusters from VKr 1.28.15 to VKr 1.29.4/VKr1.27.16 to VKr 1.28.8, the process often hangs or fails to complete. Users see the upgrade stuck in progress

Environment

VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service

Cause

The system permits upgrades from VKr 1.28.15 to VKr 1.29.4, however, this path triggers a "back in time" upgrade for certain packages, causing the upgrade process to hang or fail indefinitely.

Resolution

Upgrade from VKr 1.28.15 or later patches is not supported to 1.29.4 version. This would result in a back in time upgrade for some of the packages and the fixes available in 1.28.15+ patch will not be available in 1.29.4. If you have already initiated an upgrade from 1.28.15 to 1.29.4, follow KB 378212 to revert the cluster back to 1.28.15

Upgrade from VKr 1.27.16 and above is not supported to 1.28.8 version. This would result in a back in time upgrade for some of the packages and the fixes available in 1.27.16 or later patches will not be available in 1.28.8. If you have already initiated an upgrade from 1.27.16 to 1.28.8, follow KB 378212 to revert the cluster back to 1.27.16.
