Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to add/remove the ESXi host from the distributed switch.
  • The following error message is displayed:
Reconfigure vSphere Distributed Switch: The operation is not supported on the object.
Not allowed to remove nsxBacked host <hostname> from dvs <dvsname>
  • The ESXi host was recently rebuilt due to an underlying issue, and the current issue was reported after the rebuild.
  • There are no NSX components installed on the host after the rebuild.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi
VMware NSX

Cause

The ESXi host was rebuilt without being properly removed from the Distributed Virtual Switch in vCenter.
This resulted in a stale or orphaned entry in the DVS configuration, leaving the host in an “out of sync” state that prevents removal or re-addition of the host.

Resolution

Resolve the out of sync issue reported on the distributed switch.
Post which re-add the ESXi host to inventory and distributed switch.
