Issue/Introduction

 

Customer unable to boot up the Redhat linux OS on their DB VM. Unable to choose from BIOS the bootable OS disk missing VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (2:9)

 

Removable Devices

- Hard drive

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:1)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:2)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:3)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:4)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:5)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0,6)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (0:8)

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (2:9)  <<----------------Missing or unable to detect from the BIOS boot up OS disk

Network boot from VMware VMXNET3

Environment

ESXi 7.x

ESXi 8.x

 

Cause

Customer had recently move to another storage and upon try to power ON the VM was not able to boot up from its Redhat Linux OS

Resolution

As per KB reference: https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/326326/changing-the-boot-order-of-a-virtual-mac.html

 

a. Make a backup copy of the VM *.vmx file (recommended /tmp)

b. Go to the VM folder directory and modify the vmx file, on the KB article we choose option 2 steps

c. vi vmname.vmx file and add the following entries at the last end entries of the vmx file

      bios.bootOrder="hdd"

      bios.hddOrder= "scsi2:9"

d. save the vmx file > ESC key > wq!

e. Reboot again and enter BIOS mode and modify the boot order to boot first on

    VMware Virtual SCSI Hard drive (2:9)  <<----------------Verify this exists on the BIOS list and choose to boot first

Network boot from VMware VMXNET3

 

f. Reboot VM and at this stage the OS manage to boot up its Redhat-Linux OS
