VMware vSAN

Issue/Introduction

When introducing a new host into a vSAN cluster, only some of the available disks are claimed.

The disks do not show up in Storage Devices. And the associated vmhbas do not show up in Storage Adapters.

Environment

vSAN 7.x

vSAN 8.x

Cause

Hardware-related issue.

All Paths Down events may be listed for the missing disks.

In vmkernel.log, sense data is thrown indicating issues with the HBA: H:0x7 D:0x0 P:0x0

  • This status is returned when a device has been reset due to a Storage Initiator Error. This typically occurs due to an outdated HBA firmware or possibly (though rarely) as the result of a bad HBA

Resolution

Reseat cables and/or controllers.

Else, contact the hardware vendor for assistance diagnosing and resolving the problem.
