Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • User need to change the vSAN witness node on a stretched cluster and received the following error when selecting the new witness from the "Change witness" wizard.

Environment

VMWare vSAN 7.x

VMWare vSAN 8.x

Cause

The process of changing the Witness Host is a fundamental modification to the vSAN cluster topology. The operation relies on the ability to smoothly transfer cluster ownership and metadata consistency to the new host. If the cluster's current on-disk format is too old, the system knows it cannot reliably complete this complex, version-dependent operation. Hence it prevent changing the vSAN witness node in cluster with inconsistent on disk format on the disks.

Resolution

Upgrade the vSAN on-disk format for the concerned disks and once the on-disk format is completed and consistent, then retry the vSAN witness host change operation. The Change Witness Host operation will succeed post completing the on-disk format upgrade.
