When NSX is installed in a vSphere environment, ESXI hosts have an additional kernel interface called a TEP (tunnel endpoint) to send / receive Geneve encapsulated traffic.
In this case:
- NSX is installed
- NSX Edges are present in the environment
- ESXi host TEP IP pool and Edge TEP IP pool are two different subnets
Pings between Edge TEPs and ESXi host TEPs receive no reply.
VMware NSX
The cause for this is usually in the physical underlay (especially routing).
It is recommended to verify that the physical NICs used to forward traffic from the TEPs on the ESXi host and Edge ESXi host are successfully forwarding traffic. If that is the case, then this issue should be investigated in the physical underlay with your physical network team / vendor. This issue may also be observed temporarily while maintenance on the physical underlay is being performed.
