Issue/Introduction

  • Converting a cluster to use Image fails at the Compliance check task with error "A failure occurred when starting an operation on the entity 'host-###' : Failed to write lock entities host-### due to concurrent activity as part of another operation.".

  • Under Recent Tasks on vSphere Client, the below task is listed:

Note: The task can be any Lifecycle Manager task running for unknown duration.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

  • For any Lifecycle Manager operations, vCenter needs to acquire a write lock on the ESXi hosts involved.
  • The error is caused by lingering lock state from a stuck Lifecycle Manager task on vCenter Server, which blocks new operations from acquiring host locks.

Resolution

Restart the Update Manager Server on the vCenter Server to resolve the issue:

  • SSH to the vCenter Server as root -> enter shell.
  • Restart the service: service-control --restart updatemgr
