Issue/Introduction

Warning "Physical RDM disks are not supported" while taking backup from 3rd party vendor backup tool (Example Veeam, Acronis, Commvault, and Rubrik etc)

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

Snapshots or 3rd Party vendor backup are not supported on Physical mode Raw Device Mappings.

Ref: Snapshots are not available when the RDM is used in physical compatibility mode.

Resolution

Check if the VM has RDMs Ref : Identifying Virtual Machines with Raw Device Mappings (RDMs)

RDM can be converted to VMDK for resolution Ref: Converting a Raw Device Mapping (RDM) into virtual disk (VMDK) and take snapshot or 3rd party backup.
