NSX adding new compute manager to replace existing compute managers

Issue/Introduction

There may be scenarios when a vCenter is being decommissioned and it is also configured as a compute manager in NSX. A new vCenter has been configured to take place of this decommissioning vCenter.

Common concern for this activity are:

• If adding a new compute manager to the NSX would cause issue to the other compute managers
• If removing the existing compute managers from NSX would result in datapath issue

Resolution

To answer these concerns:

• Adding a compute manager NSX should not cause any outages, NSX is merely adding a connection to the vCenter and getting the inventory from it
• Removal of an existing compute manager might not work which could due to the following reason:
  • Existing NSX appliance (managers or edge VMs) are created using this compute manager. Check KB: Failed to delete Compute Manager in NSX-T https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?articleNumber=319043
