Issue/Introduction

  • Cannot create a quiesced snapshot of vCHA passive or witness node
  • In the vmware.log file of the VM, you see entries similar to:
    YYYY-MM-DDTXX:XX:XX.XXXZ In(05) vmx - [msg.snapshot.quiesce.vmerr] The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing.
YYYY-MM-DDTXX:XX:XX.XXXZ In(05)+ vmx - The error code was: 2
YYYY-MM-DDTXX:XX:XX.XXXZ In(05)+ vmx - The error message was: Custom quiesce script failed.

Environment

vCenter Server 7.x
vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The quiesced snapshot fails because taking snapshots of vCHA passive and witness nodes are not supported. 

Resolution

As mentioned in KB 313528, snapshot operations on passive and witness nodes are not supported.
