VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

  • Looking for a best approach to move a vCenter server appliance to a new cluster which is managed by same vCenter and a new network with a different IP, subnet mask and gateway.
  • vCenter PNID is FQDN here and hostname is not changing here.

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Resolution

Recommended Approach:

Follow below steps to ensure a smooth migration of the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA):

  1. Network Accessibility:
Ensure that the new cluster has access to both the current vCenter network and the target network.
This dual connectivity will allow you to perform a seamless vMotion of the VCSA to the new cluster without interruption.

  2. vMotion to New Cluster:
Once the network connectivity is confirmed, vMotion the VCSA to the new cluster.

  3. Update Network Configuration:
After the VCSA is successfully running in the new cluster, update its network settings (IP address, subnet mask, and gateway) by following the guidelines provided in the VMware Knowledge Base article: Best Practices for Changing the IP Address of vCenter Server
