Environments where vSAN Witness node can be deployed

Issue/Introduction

• The VMware vSAN witness appliance is often deployed on a different site from the vSAN cluster to which it is being used.
• Questions such as the following may arise when looking for environments to deploy the vSAN witness appliance : "Is it possible to deploy the vSAN Witness appliance" : 
  • On Microsoft Azure Cloud?
  • On Azure VMware Solutions (AVS)?

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

VMware vSAN 8.x

Resolution

• vSAN witness appliance must be deployed on a licensed ESXi host. 
• Meaning, you can deploy vSAN witness appliance on an ESXi host in an AVS environment. But not on Azure cloud.

Note : The vSAN witness appliance cannot be deployed on an Azure cloud since it lacks authorization to run a licensed ESXi host.
