Issue/Introduction

  • vMotion operation is successful across all ESXi hosts, however fails to or from a specific ESXi host. The following error is seen in vCenter UI:

Error: A general system error occurred: Launch failure. Failed to start migration: Bad parameter. vMotion migration [0:7############387] init failed. An invalid source IP address was specified: <0.0.0.0>
  • Virtual machine migration fails with the task status at 19%.

Cause

  • 0.0.0.0 is the representation of invalid address.

  • This issue occurs when there is a network interruption causing connectivity issues with assigned IP address.

  • In the case of DHCP please confirm if DHCP server is reachable or experiencing delayed responses leading to a timeout.

Resolution

  1. Verify the assigned configured IP for vMotion is reachable by using ping command.

  2. If vMotion is configured for the first time
    1. For static, assign a valid unused static IP address
    2. For DHCP, ensure the DHCP server is reachable and assign an IP address within the allowed range.
