Issue/Introduction

When creating a new VM from a template in vCenter Server, if you click "CONFIGURE PER DISK" on the "Select Storage" screen, select a file, and then proceed to "CONFIGURE" the "Select virtual disk format" option does not appear, making it impossible to select the disk format.

Environment

vSphere 8.0

Cause

If only the virtual machine configuration file is selected on the "CONFIGURE PER DISK" screen, you cannot select the disk format because the configuration file is not a virtual disk.

Resolution

On the "CONFIGURE PER DISK" screen, you can select the disk format by selecting files, including virtual disk files (.vmdk files).

Below are the steps to deploy a virtual machine from a template using "CONFIGURE PER DISK".

  1. Start the "Deploy From Template" wizard.
  2. On the "Select a name and folder" page, enter a unique name for the virtual machine and select a deployment location.
  3. On the "Select a compute resource" page, select the host, cluster, resource pool, or vApp where you want the virtual machine to run, and click "Next".
  4. On the "Select storage" page, select "CONFIGURE PER DISK".
  5. Select the files, including the virtual disk file (.vmdk file).
  6. Click "CONFIGURE".
  7. Select the "disk format", "VM Storage Policy" and the destination datastore, and click "Confirm".
  8. Repeat steps 5, 6, and 7 to enter settings for all disks for which you entered settings.
  9. Click "Next".
  10. On the "Select clone options" screen, select additional customization options for the new virtual machine.
  11. On the "Customize guest OS" screen, apply the customization specification to the virtual machine.
  12. On the "Customize hardware" screen, configure the virtual machine's hardware and options, then click "Next".
  13. On the "Ready to complete" page, review the information and click "Finish".

The procedure for deploying a virtual machine from a template is also described in the following document:
