Issue/Introduction

  • One of the virtual machine snapshots grew uncontrollably until it occupied all the space on the datastore.  
  • Snapshots files where deleted manually but snapshot manager still contain related entries.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

Datastore with snapshots out of space.

Resolution

Follow article below:

Delete all Snapshots and Consolidate Snapshots Feature

If methods from the article did not resolve the issue implement steps below:

1. Create  new vm with the same settings  like problematic vms. 

2. Detach disks of the new vm and delete them.

3. Power off problematic vm.

4. Attach disks of the problematic vm to the new vm.

5. Power on new vm and check if that vm show any snapshots.

6. If new vm work correctly and don't show snapshot keep it powered on.

7. Detach disks from problematic vm.

8. Delete problematic vm.

9. Shut down and change name of the new vm to match name of the problematic vm. 

 Corrupted snapshot entries will be removed with the original problematic vm.
