Issue/Introduction

The VCSA upgrade fails at "3. Import copied data to target vCenter Server" of Stage 2.

A message similar to the following appears:

An internal error occurs during the upgrade process.
Please search the VMware Knowledge Base for known issues and possible resolutions for these symptoms. If none are found, collect a support bundle and open a support request.

Cause

An error occurs if the destination VCSA cannot resolve the name of the VC/ESXi specified as the deployment target.

The following message can be confirmed in /var/log/vmware/upgrade/import-upgrade-runner.log.

YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:ss.SSSZ ERROR networking_utils Could not validate host dummy.example.com: [Errno -2] Name or service not known

Resolution

Configure DNS settings on the destination VCSA so that it can resolve the names of the VC/ESXi specified as the deployment target.
