Issue/Introduction

 

  • A path to storage will show down in /var/log/vmkernel.log
    Lost path redundancy to storage device naa.#######################. Path vmhba#:C#:T#:L# is down. Affected datastores: <Datastore-Name>
  • Once all path goes down you will see this in the vmkernel logs:
    Device or filesystem with identifier [naa.###########################] has entered the All Paths Down state
  • You will also see the paths showing not Online:
    vmkernel: cpu33:2097647)qedf:vmhba##:qedfc_checkTarget:####:Info: RPORT 0x############# is not ONLINE

Resolution

If you are doing any maintenance work on the switches or the storage array ensure that before bringing one side of the fabric down, the other side is active and up. This can be checked by running this command:

 

esxcli storage core path list

 

Bringing all sides of the fabric down will lead to APD followed by HA event causing VMs to power off and power on, on the other hosts in the cluster not impacted by APD.
