Issue/Introduction

Provider VDC creation task fails with Internal Server Error and NullPointerException, and Provider VDC cannot be enabled.
Failed to create Organization VDC with the created Provider VDC, because the Provider VDC is in a disabled state.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.5
VMware Cloud Director 10.6

Cause

ESXi that is not compatible with VMware Cloud Director, are registered to the vCenter.
During Provider VDC creation, VMware Cloud Director checks what virtual hardware is available for each guest OS in ESXis.
When checking for vTPM availability, ESXi 6.5 or earlier don't support it and don't return any information, causing NullPointerException.
Note : This issue occur even if incompatible ESXi isn't intended for use by VMware Cloud Director, because this check is perfromed against all ESXis within all vSphere Clusters.

Resolution

Please do one of the following:

  • Move incompatible ESXi to a vSphere Datacenter object instead of a vSphere Cluster in the vSphere Client inventory.
  • Upgrade incompatible ESXi to the versions compatible with VMware Cloud Director.
  • Unregister incompatible ESXi from the vSphere Client inventory.
