Issue/Introduction

  • VCHA has to be reconfigured, in certain situations such as vCenter upgrade.
  • Upon reconfiguring, VCHA UI interface shows invalid VCHA configuration with an error similar to "vCenter HA has invalid configuration. Remove vCenter HA to destroy the current cluster configuration and set up vCenter HA again"
  • In VCHA logs, following entries are reported:

/var/log/vmware/vcha/prepare-vcha.log

[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] INFO prepare-vcha Opening firewall ports for VCHA..
[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] INFO prepare-vcha Reloading firewall...
[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] ERROR prepare-vcha firewall-reload failed with error: flock: cannot open lock file /var/tmp/vmware-firewall-reload.flock: Permission denied

Cause

The vmware-firewall-reload.flock file did not have the correct ownership or permissions, which prevented related services or configurations from executing properly.

Resolution

Please follow below mentioned steps to resolve VCHA reconfiguration failure:

  1. Correct the ownership of vmware-firewall-reload.flock:

    cd /var/tmp/
    chown root:root vmware-firewall-reload.flock

  2. Redeploy VCHA.

If the issue persist, please open a support case with Broadcom to clear out stale entries of previous VCHA configuration.

Please note to take a snapshot of the vCenter Server or offline snapshots of all the vCenter servers configured with ELM.
