Issue/Introduction

  • vCenter update failed, stuck at 80%, "Exception occured in postinstallHook".

  • In the update log (Patchrunner.log), the progress of start all services was terminated as failed to start VCHA services.

--/var/log/vmware/applmgmt/Patchrunner.log
Performing start operation on profile: ALL...
, stderr=Service-control failed. Error: Failed to start services in profile ALL. RC=2, stderr=Failed to start vcha services. Error: Service crashed while starting

  • But the vCenter was not a VCHA configuration.

# cat /storage/vmware-vmon/defaultStartProfile
 ALL

Environment

VMware vCenter 7.0

Resolution

1.Check  and found the start type of VCHA service was "AUTOMATIC".

# /usr/lib/vmware-vmon/vmon-cli --status vcha
Name: vcha
Starttype: AUTOMATIC
RunState: STOPPED

2.Set the start type of VCHA service to DISABLE or MANUAL as it's not a VCHA configuration.

# /usr/lib/vmware-vmon/vmon-cli --update vcha --starttype DISABLED

or

# /usr/lib/vmware-vmon/vmon-cli --update vcha --starttype MANUAL

3.Re-attempt to install vCenter patch

Command> software-packages install --staged
