Issue/Introduction

vCenter Server reports the error:

  • Unable to apply DRS resource settings on host. The operation is not allowed in the current state.. This can significantly reduce the effectiveness of DRS.

ESX host reports the error:

  • Preparing resource pool update
State Transition (VM_STATE_ON -> VM_STATE_RECONFIGURING) not allowed for this Vm : VM is CRX and only limited methods are allowed

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Server 8.0

Cause

vCenter Server try to change resource settings for vCLS VM though it is prohibited to apply them.

Resolution

Currently there is no resolution. This will be fixed in the future release.

Workaround:

Disabling/Enabling Retreat Mode.
All vCLS VM is recreated during this operation and vCenter will stop to change resource settings for newly created vCLS VM

For more information about above operation, see Disable vCLS on a Cluster via Retreat Mode
