Issue/Introduction

  • This document outlines the procedure to introduce a new TCA Bom Release (TBR) into TCA for an existing K8s version within a given TCA release
  • We will be utilising an existing kernel via a Bring Your Own Image (BYOI) template
  • This can be used address trhe Current TBR compatibility without impacting corresponding workload cluster nodepools

NOTE: If we change the TKG template the Node pool would be impacted a detailed information available as known issue "reference 3438816"

Environment

3.x

Resolution

Please follow the steps below to upgrade to the new TBR in TCA, in the below examples we will be existing the kernel version and template from TCA 3.2:

Upgrade the Workload Cluster  to the new TBR for  Classy Standard Workload Cluster

  1. Review the current kernel version of the node pool via the control plane, login utilizing capv and run the following command:

    kubectl get nodes -owide

Below is an example of the output expected, we are looking to confirm the Kubernetes version is 1.30.2 and the kernel version is 6.1.102-3.ph5

2. Validate the TBR warning and then select upgrade the workload cluster- Click Next:

3. At this stage select Only Control plane  and the new TBR -  Click Next

4: You can skip or check the box to do the pre-check (Optional) - Click Next

5. At this stage select the same compatible template of TKG not the new one (This ensures that we do not modify the template and does not impact the existing Nodepools). Click Next

TCA 3.3 template is 24648109 For TCA 3.2 24245615

Example:

Note: The ControlPlane Target Virtual Machine Template now has the existing BYOI is use

6. Review the selection and then click on Upgrade to initiate the Workload cluster upgrade / TBR and Control Plane.
