This article describes what Link Status of vmnicX means.
To check the status from the command line via SSH, run the following command:
esxcli network nic list or esxcfg-nics -l
Sample output:

Note: The Link Status column specifies the status of the link between the physical network adapter and the physical switch.
If the "Link Status" shows as Down, then contact the host hardware vendor for troubleshooting.
