Issue/Introduction

  • Service vmware-eam start fails with following error:
    • service-control --start vmware-eam

            "translatable": "An error occurred while starting service '%(0)s'",
            "args": [
                "eam"
            ],
            "localized": "An error occurred while starting service 'eam'"

  • In VMON log (var/log/vmware/vmon):

[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] Wa(03) host-XXXXX <eam> Service pre-start command's stderr: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS  Invoked command: ['/usr/sbin/logrotate', '/etc/logrotate.d/vmware-eam.lr', '-f', '-s', '/dev/null']
[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] Wa(03)+ host-XXXX
[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] Wa(03) host-XXXXX <eam> Service pre-start command's stderr: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS RC = 1
[YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS] Wa(03)+ host-XXXX Stderr = error: cannot stat /etc/logrotate.d/vmware-eam.lr: No such file or directory

  • vCLS VMs are not deployed after switching the cluster from retreat mode back to normal mode.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Resolution

  • The service vmware-eam was failing to start due to a missing configuration file (/etc/logrotate.d/vmware-eam.lr).
  • Copy the missing vmware-eam.lr file under /etc/logrotate.d/ from a healthy vCenter or contact Broadcom Technical Team for further assistance.
  • Restart the EAM service.

Note: Ensure that the vCenter Snapshot is taken before making the above changes.
