Issue/Introduction

Issue observed in the vCenter upgrade

Pre upgrade check fails with the below error - Error "pre upgrade check failed due the following problem error in method invocation {error 2} host name lookup failure"

 

Environment

vCenter 7.x

Cause

The Newly deployed vCenter will not be able to reach the source vCenter's managing ESXi host or the vCenter using FQDN

Resolution

• Login to the newly deployed vCenter and perform nslookup of the ESXi host FQDN or the VC managing the source vCenter
• Update the VC configuration Wizard with the DNS IP of the ESXi host or VC managing the source VC.

if the DNS IP servers:

• Connect to newly deployed VC 
  • nslookup <ESXI host/managing VC FQDN>
  • If the DNS resolution fails collect the DNS server IP of  ESXI host/DNS server IP of source VC
  • add the DNS server IP in the newly deployed VC
• If still pre upgrade check fails verify if the temporary IP has the port 53 whitelisted in the firewall
