Issue/Introduction

We are planning to upgrade our existing v11.0 gateway appliances to 11.1 and plan to use the in-place upgrade documentation:

Debian 12 In-Place Upgrade

and are looking for more practical advices.

Environment

Version: 11.0
Component CA API Gateway

Resolution

Upgrade gateway from 11.0 to 11.1

NOTE Gateway will not start until the last step, where you update the database

Make sure the monthly platform patch is at least 2024 Aug  (Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_64bit_v11.0-Debian-2024-08-26) for OS Platform Update

Step 0. Upgrade Readiness (ssg-inplace-upgrade-readiness-checker_v11.1.00.17707.sh) to check its readiness.

      File to Use:

      ssg-inplace-upgrade-readiness-checker_v11.1.00.17707.sh (included in Layer7_API_Gateway_Appliance_Upgrader_11.1.00.zip)

Step 0.5. Highly recommended to take a VM Snapshot before proceeding. If your database is external, make sure you also take a full backup of your database just in case you need to revert back to the before upgrade state.

Step 1. Install Debian12 OS Platform Patch (Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_v11.1.00-Debian-17707.L7P)  - Updates to Debian 12  - REBOOT

      File to Use:

      Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_v11.1.00-Debian-17707.L7P (included in Layer7_API_Gateway_Appliance_Upgrader_11.1.00.zip)

Step 2. Update Gateway Binary from 11.0 to 11.1  (Layer7_API_Gateway_Debian_v11.1.00-17707.L7P)

Apply the GW 11.1 Gateway Patch (Debian) (Layer7_API_Gateway_Debian_v11.1.00-17707.L7P).  - (reboot)

File to Use: Layer7_API_Gateway_Debian_v11.1.00-17707.L7P  (included in Layer7_API_Gateway_Appliance_Upgrader_11.1.00.zip)

Step 3. Upgrade PMS to 2.0.0

Gateway 11.1 and later needs PMS 2.0.0+ :  Update PMS Patch v2.0 (Layer7_API_PMS_Debian_v2.0.0-20240715115049.L7P)

      Reboot required.

File to Use: Layer7_API_PMS_Debian_v2.0.0-20240715115049.L7P (The same file is included in both the Layer7_API_Gateway_v11.1.1.zip and Layer7_API_Gateway_v11.1.2.zip as of this writing)

Step 4. Apply latest GW11.1 Platform Update MPP

Install the Debian12 latest platform patch ( Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_64bit_v11.1-Debian-yyyy-mm-dd.L7P)

      Reboot required.

      File to Use:

Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_64bit_v11.1-Debian-yyyy-mm-dd.L7P (This v11.1 Platform MPP needs to be the same or newer than the 11.0 Platform MPP before the upgrade)

Step 5. Upgrade database from GW11.0 to GW11.1.0 -   Gateway up and running

Gateway Database Upgrader.

Enter 'quit' to exit at any time.

Database upgrade is required.

 Software version : 11.1.00

 Database version : 11.0.00

Perform upgrade? [No]: yes

Considerations Before Upgrade to 11.1.x

It can be a bit confusing when it comes to the downloading and applying the correct L7P in part because there are two dowloading sources:

Within the "Solutions and Patches," you can find Gateway Software upgrades(or patches) and Platform patches (aka MPP). The Gateway Software upgrade is usually named as Layer7_API_Gateway_{OSTYPE}_v{VERSION}-{BUILD}.L7P. The Platform patches is usually named as Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_{OSandVersion}-yyyy-mm-dd.L7P.

This arrangement allows you to use the same Platform Update on different versions of the Gateway Software. For example,  Layer7_API_PlatformUpdate_64bit_v11.1-Debian-2025-08-24.L7P can be used on 11.1.0, 11,1,1 and 11.1.2 so long as you already have PMS 2.0.0. Please also note that if you are upgrading from 11.0, the v11.1 Platform Update needs to be the same or newer than the MPP you have had applied on 11.0.
