Issue/Introduction

VM CBT is disabled.
Backups fall back to full backups.
In vmware.log we see multiple entries in different form with respect to cleanshutdown as false

Cause

Existing CTK metadata was invalidated and wiped by the VMX following an unclean shutdown of the VM. Subsequently, the backup tool explicitly disabled CTK via API unsets, which prevented its reinitialization on new snapshots. Due to this lack of CTK history, later incremental backups were forced to fall back to full-data transfers. 

Resolution

Please make sure that the VM is gracefully shutdown

  1. Access the vSphere Client (if using vCenter) or the ESXi host's web interface directly.
  2. In the inventory pane, locate and select the virtual machine you wish to shut down. 
  3. Graceful Shutdown: Right-click the virtual machine and navigate to Power > Shut Down Guest OS. This initiates a clean shutdown from within the guest operating system.
