Issue/Introduction

Virtual machines configured with a PCI passthrough device might fail to boot.
In such cases, the passthrough device may disappear from the VM’s configuration and from the ESXi host’s PCI device list.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.x

Cause

This behavior is caused by a hotplug interrupt during a PCI device reset event, which can lead to device disconnects when the VM is powered on.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in ESXi 8.0 Update 3g (80P06).

  • The fix enables the advanced option disableHPInterruptsOnLinkDownReset by default.

  • This prevents hotplug interrupts from being triggered during device reset events.

  • No side effects are expected, as hotplug interrupts are not normally generated during device resets.

Additional Information

  • Fix was verified by OEM partners and tested internally across multiple hardware platforms.
