Issue/Introduction

In NSX-T, customers may encounter a scenario where traceflow operations consistently fail with the error message:
“Traceflow request timeout. Please retry.”

This issue can occur even when the two VMs involved are on the same host and segment.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center

Cause

The failure occurs due to cache overflow on the NSX-T Managers, likely caused by prolonged uptime.

Evidence for this includes:

  • Notification: "Traceflow result was dropped because of cache overflow."

  • Browser repeatedly sending the same query during debug sessions.

  • NSX-T Managers had uptime exceeding 340 days, indicating a possible accumulation of cached data or stale states.

Resolution

Perform a rolling reboot of the NSX-T Managers.
After the reboot, traceflow operations completed successfully, confirming that clearing the manager cache and resetting its operational state resolved the issue.
